CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults)

CELTA opens vast career opportunities for teachers. This certificate is a widely recognized standard in many language schools worldwide.

The CELTA course was developed by Cambridge University in 1970. The creation of the course was driven by the growing expectations for the quality of English language teaching. This trend was influenced by globalization and increased international interaction in all areas of life.

Differences between CELTA and other courses

The essence and key difference of CELTA compared to other teacher training courses is its practical focus on organizing an effective learning process. Teachers study not only the methodological aspects of teaching but also participate in practical lessons, where they acquire useful skills such as classroom management and the use of teaching aids (textbooks, audio, video materials).

CELTA is more of a training than an exam. Assessment of knowledge happens daily throughout the course, and upon completion, each teacher receives a certificate with one of the following grades: Pass, Pass B (Good), or Pass A (Excellent).

Who is the course for?

This course is recommended for:

  • English teachers who want to improve their qualifications and acquire teaching skills required in modern conditions,

  • Those who have no prior teaching experience (e.g., translators),

  • Those who wish to retrain as English teachers.

Applicants must have English proficiency at least at the C1 or Advanced level. Additionally, applicants need education equivalent to university entry level in their home country.

Methodology and course content

The CELTA teaching method is based on two core principles:

  • Focus on communicative training. Teachers gain skills to effectively teach students to communicate freely in English while ensuring correct use of vocabulary and grammar.

  • Only English is used in teaching, meaning the student’s native language is not used during the course.

The total duration of the course is 120 academic hours (4 weeks, 7-8 hours per day, Monday to Friday).

Components of the CELTA course

Theoretical lessons:

  • Language grammar structures

  • Vocabulary, pronunciation, and speaking

Teaching practice:
All students complete a mandatory 6-hour teaching practice with volunteer students. Teaching is conducted in at least two groups (Elementary and Upper-Intermediate levels). Each practice session is analyzed and assessed, and each participant receives personal written feedback.

Tutor consultations:
All participants have the opportunity to observe practical sessions led by other trainees. After lessons, experienced tutors provide detailed analysis of strengths and weaknesses of each teacher. Several individual consultations with the tutor are also conducted during the course.

Written assignments:
